Financial Aid

Most college students in New Hampshire receive some form of financial aid. In general, however, families are still expected to contribute to the costs of college through loans or other means.

The financial aid process may seem complex, but it comes down to understanding five steps:

You must complete the federal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) soon after January 1 of the year you intend to enroll in school. Check with each of the colleges to which you apply for specific deadlines and required forms.

Your FAFSA is submitted to the U.S. Department of Education, which calculates your expected family contribution (EFC). The EFC is based on factors that affect your ability to pay. These include income, assets, and number of family members in college.

The Department of Education sends information to every school you listed on the FAFSA. School financial aid officers subtract your EFC from the cost of attendance to determine your eligibility for financial aid.

Based on available resources, each school calculates the amount of financial aid the institution can offer. Note that eligibility for a certain amount of aid does not guarantee that a student will get that amount.

The college’s financial aid officer sends an award letter detailing the amount of aid the college is able to offer you. Aid is broken down into loans, grants, scholarships, and work-study.

College Scholarships

College scholarships are an important source of tuition aid. Scholarships are available for students on the basis of academic merit, financial need, and other factors. Scholarships may be state-based or reach beyond state and country boundaries.

New Hampshire Scholarships

New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation. The NHHEAF Network offers state and national scholarship databases, as well as other resources.

New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation is the state’s largest provider of publicly available scholarships.

GEAR UP. Students who are part of the GEAR UP New Hampshire program may be eligible for a federally funded GEAR UP Scholarship.
